1. At Tech Support Alert we first carried out a full literature review of previous anti trojan tests. 2. We then identified what anti-trojan products were available. We only considered products that detected a broad range of trojans. This excluded programs designed to remove only one family of trojans, such as dedicated Back Orifice removers. 3. We ended up with a list of 44 candidates!. This was was reduced to eight leading products by applying these screening criteria. 4. Copies of the products were downloaded from the Web where possible. Where full featured versions were not available for download, we requested review copies from the vendor or purchased the product outright. 5. Having completed the literature review we saw no point in repeating large scale scan tests that had already been carried out by other reviewers. In fact we became increasingly aware of the limitations of scanning tests. Instead we chose to run tests covering areas that had not previously been well addressed. . The first was an intensive test of the overall trojan detection performance of the products based on both the scanner and memory monitor components of each product. The second test was a signature file currency test. The third, a scanner speed test. The fourth involved an assessment of the level of technical support offered by each vendor. 6. Our final recommendations were based on how well the products stacked up against these criteria:
